Imphal: As part of the continuing crackdown on individuals involved in illegal activities in the state, Manipur Police have arrested at least six active cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) [KCP (PWG)], including three women, for their involvement in extortion activities across separate incidents, officials said.
According to the police, one active cadre of the proscribed group KCP (PWG) was arrested from Chingarel Tejpur under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East on Thursday. The arrested individual, identified as Nongmeikapam Jilish Meitei (29) of Samurou Awang Leikai in Imphal West, was reportedly involved in extorting money from private firms and the general public to raise party funds.
In a separate but similar operation conducted the same day, two more active cadres of the same group—also accused of engaging in extortion from the general public—were apprehended from Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal under Porompat Police Station in Imphal East.
The arrested cadres have been identified as Laishram Suraj Singh, alias Ibungo (33), of Naoremthong Laishram Leirak in Imphal West, and Sapam (Ningthoujam) Kshetrimayum (Oinam) Ashangbi Devi (34), of Khurai Sajor Leikai, Tinsid Road in Imphal East. Police recovered a sum of ₹10,000 from their possession, which had reportedly been collected as extortion money earlier in the day.
Similarly, on Friday, Manipur Police arrested another three active cadres of KCP (PWG) from Thangmeiband Thingel Leikai, near the Community Hall in Imphal West. These individuals were also allegedly involved in extortion activities, police said.
The arrested have been identified as Aheibam Johnson Singh, alias Khonthang (27), of Takyel Kolom Leikai in Imphal West; Ningthoujam Scolia Devi, alias Chaoba (25), of Tairenpokpi Mayai Leikai in Imphal West; and Salam Binita Devi, alias Bemma or Tamna (22), of Ningthoukhong Mamang Leikai in Bishnupur district.
Police have stated that further investigations are underway.
