Dimapur: In a fresh development, the Congress party in Nagaland has responded to the recent induction of several individuals into the National People’s Party (NPP), dismissing the move as an inflated political gesture and reaffirming the Congress’s continued strength and organizational integrity.
In a statement shared with EastMojo, the Dimapur District Congress Committee (DDCC) clarified that several of the individuals named by the NPP as former Congress members had either ceased active participation in party affairs long ago or had never been officially affiliated with the party.
“We categorically state that these defections reflect neither the strength of the NPP nor a weakening of the Congress in Nagaland. Instead, they expose the desperation of opportunistic elements seeking political relevance,” the Congress said.
According to the DDCC, among those named by the NPP as joining its party, Nukshi Jamir, formerly a General Secretary of the District Youth Congress, had been inactive for nearly a year after shifting to the Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress. Similarly, Onen Jamir, who held the position of ACC President for Dimapur-3 between 2017 and 2019, disengaged from the party soon after his tenure and had not participated in party activities since.
“Their departure is inconsequential to our organizational integrity,” the party said.
The statement further asserted that a number of individuals presented by the NPP as “INC members” had never held valid primary membership in the Indian National Congress, nor were they recognized by the DDCC, and “have no documented contribution to the party’s activities or ideals.”
It described their claimed association with the Congress as “bogus and politically motivated,” likely orchestrated to inflate NPP’s recruitment claims.
The Congress condemned what it described as an attempt to mislead the public by presenting inactive or non-existent members as significant defectors. This tactic, the party said, only undermines ethical political discourse.
“We reassure our dedicated karyakartas and the people of Nagaland that the Congress remains firmly committed to its principles and grassroots strength,” the statement read, adding that the party is currently undertaking a thorough membership verification drive to safeguard its organizational integrity.
